Super Slatko

Since we’re talking about the silver screen in Episode 118, DJ Moe dedicates the Super Slatko Report to the wonderful movies that have been filmed in Croatia. How many films can you name?

This first one we have talked about more than a few times, it’s also less of a movie and more of an epic show. Of course I am talking about the 8 season epic series, Game Of Thrones. As you have heard from me and from probably others, Dubrovnik was the used as the shows backdrop for King’s Landing. I recently also mentioned in Episode 109, in North East Split, Klis Fortress was also used in the show as a backdrop for the city or Mareen.

Onto some movies…

Staying in Dubrovnik, you can add 2017’s Star Wars The Last Jedi to the list of movies filmed in this picturesque walled city. Obviously for a space movie, Croatia or Dubrovnik for that matter are not mentioned, so for this film Dubrovnik goes by the Casino city name of “Canto Bight.”

There are countless other films and shows that were filmed here and will be filmed in Dubrovnik in the future, its beauty, architecture and waterside location make it such a lure for so many filmmakers, you will be seeing it again.

The next film that I wanted to mention is 2018’s Mamma Mia! - Here we go again. This sequel to the 2008 smash hit of the same name, sans the ‘Here we go again’ moniker, was a massive success all over the world. This sequel alone brought in over $400 million dollars world wide. Mamma Mia! - Here we go again is a Romantic Comedy, loaded to the brim with famous actors, but in my opinion the biggest star was the location, Otok Vis. Filmed all over the world, from Bordeaux, to Stockholm, to Oxford, to Hampton; but the majority of the filming was on location in Croatia. Although Otok Vis is where it was filmed, in the movie, it’s used as Greece…

This next film is on the older side, but it’s highly acclaimed, with Academy Award nomination accolades as, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Orignal Score, and Best Actress. This time around I am speaking of the 1982 psychological drama Sophie’s Choic. This film stars Meryl Streep, who won best actress for her role in the film. The film is set just after World War II, the writer-director Alan J. Pakula wanted to have a Polish city as his backdrop and opted to use Zagreb for some of the most memorable scenes in the film as it reminded him a lot of the cities he had in mind.

And for the final film I’ll mention, it’s 1971’s musical Fidler on the Roof. Like I said this movie is a musical, so theres music and singing, but from what I remember there was also a good deal of sly humor as well. The movie is older so allow me to quote IMDb for a brief synopsis. Set “in pre-revolutionary Russia, a Jewish peasant with traditional values contends with marrying off three of his daughters with modern romantic ideals…” There’s more to the story, but I’ll let any of you out there interested in giving it a watch something to discover on your own. The movie was filmed at a time when Croatia was part of Yugoslavia and Croatia was known as a region. The film was supposed to be set in a Ukrainian village, but it was primarily filmed on a sound stage in Buckinhamshire, England. When outdoor shots were called for, Mala Gorica, Lekenik and Zagreb, Gornji Grad were used.

In 1972, Fidler on the Roof, was nominated for 8 academy awards, winning 4 of them.

  • Best cinematography - won

  • Best Sound - won

  • Best Music - won

  • Best Picture - won

  • Best Actor

  • Best Supporting Actor

  • Best Director

  • Best Art Direction

This film was no slouch.

Of that list Worth noticing, the win for Best Cinematography is a nice nod to the locations used.

This was a fun topic, there are tons of shows, reality shows, and other movies that I didn’t mention; all filmed in Croatia. And for good reason, it’s beautiful there. I’m not recommending these shows or movies for you to watch or to watch these movies instead of visiting these scenic locations your self, mainly just highlighting a few Croatia - big screen appearances that showcases this picturesque country.

And thats it for the Super Slatko Report.
