Super Slatko Report

In another trip down memory lane, DJ Moe will talk about the accomplishments of the 1998 Croatian Men’s Soccer Team! Stick around for this edition of SSR and find out more about Croatia’s adventures in the 1998 World Cup in France.

Todays Super Slatko is all about Croatia’s debut and 3rd place finish in the 1998 World Cup tournament held in France.

Here are a few top 6 Croatian moments from the tournament:

1. Croatia's debut at the World Cup has to be #1: The 1998 World Cup in France marked the first time that Croatia had ever qualified for the tournament. The team's participation in the event was a historic moment for the country.

2. The Opening match win over Jamaica: In their first match of the tournament, Croatia defeated Jamaica 3-1, with goals from Robert Jarni, Goran Vlaović, and Davor Šuker.

3. The big win. A 4-0 victory over Germany: Croatia stunned the football world with a 4-0 victory over Germany in the quarter-finals of the tournament. Davor Šuker scored two goals in the match. This win takes them to the semi-final match against host nation France, where they fall to France 2 goals to 1.

4. 3rd Place Finish. With a loss to France, Croatia qualifies for a 3rd place match against the Netherlands. In this match, Croatia makes history defeating the Netherlands 2-1, with goals from Davor Šuker and Robert Prosinečki.

5. The Golden Boot award. This award is given to the top scorer in the tournament. And in 1998 the top scorer was none other than Croatia’s own Davor Šuker. Šuker finished as the tournament's top scorer with six goals, he remains the only Croatian player to have won the award.

6. Historic Goal: Šuker's goal against Denmark: Davor Šuker scored one of the best goals of the tournament in Croatia's 3-0 victory over Denmark in the Round of 16. His stunning chip over the goalkeeper is still remembered as one of the greatest goals in World Cup history.

There are so many more amazing moments and close calls throughout this journey, I chose these highlights as these seemed the most compelling when you remember back that this is their first ever appearance in the tournament as a country.

I hope you found this as interesting as I did, and enjoyed the content.

And that’s it for the super slatko report.
