Super Slatko Report

In this episode of the Super Slatko Report, DJ Moe highlights three popular and rewarding hikes in Croatia. Whether you are a novice or a professional hiker, these three samples will get your feet moving in one of the most beautiful countries in the world!

The first one I’m going to cover is Plitvice Lakes and National Park. We spoke to Plitvice beauty more than few times here on the pod but not to its trail offerings specifically. Plitvice offers 8 hikes to choose from, which are called programs. Each program offers a different combination of sites that will be that trails focus, lakes & forest, and some utilizing a boat or train to complete. The hikes is considered easy to moderate and is around 8km in length (5miles) and should take about 4-5 hours to complete.

This next one is known as the Velebit Hiking Trail. This trail should take you about nine days to complete and covers 100km (62 miles).

This trail is best experienced during the summer and makes for impressive coastal views throughout. There are old villages and high peaks to check out as well some flora and fauna that you’ll see nowhere else. The hike is well kept and will have you making your way through grasslands and forests. There is no camping allowed but there are huts you can stay at, where you can sleep and get a meal. Some of them have people working there and some don’t. You will definitely need to plan ahead as there isn’t a lot of space available and this trail is popular.

Worth noting, as you may have guessed, a 9 day hike will be tough, so come prepared as creature comforts are few and far between.

The third and final hike I’m going to highlight is a combo hike and has a rating of easy. For this one make your way to Dubrovnik and start mid morning or so. Start by walking the walls. Very scenic, rich in history with views that are postcard worthy at every turn. I’ve done this part and I highly recommend it. For this combo hike your goal should be to complete the walls before noon when it’s the hottest. Perfect time to stop for a light lunch at one of the many restaurants or shops around the city.

For the second leg of your hike you will make your up to Mount Srđ. Head out around mid to late afternoon. This hike promises to reward you with breathtaking views all around and capping it all off with a panoramic sunset view over the harbor. Pace yourself, and wear good shoes as the trail is a little rocky. And if you opted for the sunset viewing, you may need a head lamp to make your way back down. This portion should take a little over an hour and is considered easy.

And if you over did it at lunch and can’t even think about exerting yourself anymore for the day, you can still make it to the top via a cable gondola ride that takes no time at all.

There are way too many trails in Croatia worth checking out, I tried to grab a span of difficulty, time and nature vs. urban. Hopefully one of those sounded as interesting to you as it did to me.

If you need a handy credible resource for trails, I highly recommend you download the app All Trails, it’s loaded with features, reviews and insights that will make your trail adventure a little easier for you.

And that’s it for the Super Slatko Report.
