Super Slatko Report

In this edition of the Super Slatko Report, DJ Moe tells us about one of the most well-known Croatian beverages to adults and especially children! We are talking about Cedevita! If you’re thirsty, you’ll definitely enjoy the information.

Let’s begin in the Croatian capital of Zagreb — the home of Cedevita. The factory for Cedevita originally opened in the Borongaj district of Zagreb. Flat city streets to forested hillsides, this is the setting for this non-typical, tropical, vitamin-drink origin story.

Cedevita was invented in 1969, and production began in 1970, under the umbrella of the Croatian pharmaceutical company Pliva.   The idea was born from research into the human body’s vitamin needs, and the result was an instant vitamin drink powder (originally orange flavour) packed with nine vitamins.  At this time, Cedevita was being sold exclusively in pharmacies in glass bottles with tiny measuring cups. So, while we tend to think of soft drinks as casual refreshers, Cedevita started with a more medicinal or nutritive ideation — bringing forth a product that brings refreshment but also wellness.

The name “Cedevita” resonates with a few interpretations — a popular explanation among consumers is that it combines “C” (Vitamin C) + “D” (Vitamin D) + “vita” (life) — though some insiders say the origin is more branding than strict chemistry.   The drink is made of powdered granules that dissolve in water, and from the start included nine vitamins (including B-complex, C and E) as their official health-angle.   Over the years, the product line expanded from the original orange flavour to lemon, grapefruit, tropical, mandarin and others., as well as versions aimed at children (Cedevita Junior) and sugar-free variants.   So Cedevita is more than one flavour—it’s a small family of powdered multivitamin drinks.

Cedevita isn’t just a nostalgic favorite—it has genuinely broad cultural and market impact. According to its manufacturer, the brand is present in “over 30 countries worldwide.”   After being acquired by the Croatian multinational Atlantic Grupa (in 2001) it leveraged its distribution networks across Southeast Europe and beyond.   On the Croatian market and in neighboring countries, Cedevita reportedly holds over 50% share in the segment of instant vitamin drinks.   For a product born in a smaller regional market, these are impressive numbers—and they signal a true cult-brand, not just a local curiosity. Think coca-cola and other staple beverages you’re used to seeing, Cedevita is definitely in the mix…. Get it???

Today, in Croatia, Cedevita is everywhere: you’ll find it in grocery stores, cafés, kiosks, and even exported through regional shops online. The brand continues to be one of Atlantic Grupa’s best-selling brands.   Its strong local performance owes both to nostalgia (many adults remember it from childhood) and to its positioning as a “refreshment plus vitamins” drink. For travellers or expats, it’s often sampled as part of the local food & drink experience. The fact that you can buy it in powder form and mix in water makes it accessible and familiar—yet flavourfully distinct from global brands.

So, to wrap things up; Cedevita is more than a soft drink—it was born as a health-oriented product; its name, ingredients and product line show a smart blend of wellness + refreshment; and it is both deeply local (iconic in Croatia) and surprisingly global in reach. Next time you’re in Croatia, pour yourself a glass of Cedevita and take a sip of straight out of Croatia’s history and culture.

And that’s it for the super Slatko report.
