Super Slatko Report

In this edition of the Super Slatko Report, DJ Moe is going to try hold his breath for 10 minutes. Maybe not, but he will tell us about a Croatian deep sea diver that set a record for holding his breath. Stick around and be amazed!

Let’s get started, because this one just might take your breath away.

40 year old Croatian free diver Vitomir Maričić has broken the world record for longest human breath ever taken. He was able to hold his breath for a mind blowing 29 minutes and 3 seconds. Believe it or not, that is almost five minutes longer than the previous record, set in 2021. The previous record held by another fellow Croatian, 56 year old freediver Budimir Šobat.

Reading that record breaking number makes you scratch your head, how does one accomplish this incredible feat?! Well for a length of time like the one Vitomir had in mind, he needed to prepare in a way I have never heard of before. Maričić inhaled pure oxygen for 10 minutes prior, preparing his body for all the carbon dioxide he was about to create while holding his breath for this amount of time. By doing so, his body was able to better balance his oxygen and CO2 levels, which helped him endure this amazing challenge. This man is also a free diver already, adept to holding his breath for long periods of time, so it wasn’t like he just walked into this off the street with no preparation, the man spent long hours in pools training for this. Without the aid of pure oxygen preparation, the longest breath held is 11 minutes and 35 seconds.

As Popular Mechanics pointed out, Vitomir’s record breaking 29 minutes and 3 seconds is 2 times longer than what a bottle nose dolphin can hold their breath for and is almost is exactly as long as what a harbor seal can hold their breath for. And if you’re wondering, the longest known breath held by a mammal comes from the Cuvier’s Beaked Whale that can stay under water for more than 3 hours. Great job Popular Mechanics.

According to DiverNet.com, Vitomir broke the record at the Bristol Hotel in Opatija, Croatia, in 3meters of water (9ft 10inches). Taking in this spectacle were judges and about 100 spectators. On the day, he dove down to the bottom of the pool, laid on his back and put his hands behind his head. It sounds like he put himself in quite the relaxing position, except for the being under 3 meters of water and holding his breath for almost 30 minutes part.

All in all, it’s an amazing accomplishment, its an insane record to hold. Vitomir Maričić is obviously a trained professional and has gone to great lengths to get to this point, all his hard work paid off in the form of a new world record. I wonder who will step up to try and steal this record from him... Who knows, maybe he’ll best the record himself.

And that’s it for the Super Slatko Report.
