Super Slatko Report

In this edition of the Super Slatko Report, you’ll need a bouncy ball and the shallows of the Adriatic Sea because DJ Moe will tell us about Croatia’s world-famous recreational game, Picigin! Where did it start and how do you play? Stick around and find out!

Picigin is a unique and playful water sport born on the super sunny shores of Croatia. Though it may not be as globally known as soccer or volleyball, Picigin is deeply cherished in Croatian coastal communities—particularly in Split. It’s a game full of dives, laughter, and camaraderie, played in the shallow sea, with one central goal: keep the ball in the air. Kind of like playing keepy-Uppie with a helium balloon as a kid, but in shallow water and a small rubber ball instead of a balloon. Even the name pee-tsee-geen,  sounds like it’s gonna be fun, and the best part about is that it’s not just a game; it’s a mix of sun, sea, and some skill.

Picigin was born over a century ago in the Croatian city of Split, on the soft, sandy shallow waters of Bačvice Beach. It began around 1908 when local students returned home from studying in Prague, bringing with them a love for water polo. But Bačvice’s shallow waters made traditional water polo difficult, so the game was adapted. They ditched the goals, kept the ball, and embraced a free-flowing version that emphasized quick reflexes and acrobatic saves. Thus, Picigin was born.

Picigin is a simple game without a scoreboard. There are no winners, no points, and no fixed teams. It’s played in ankle- to knee-deep water, typically with five players forming a loose circle. The aim is super simple: keep the small, peeled tennis ball from hitting the water. Players dive, twist, and slap the ball in the air, trying to make each volley more spectacular than the last. It’s all about style and teamwork. Anyone can play—young or old, seasoned or beginner. All you need is energy, a ball, and a willingness to splash your way to keeping the ball from getting wet..

Although it remains a staple of Split, Picigin has found curious players far beyond Croatia’s borders. Croatians abroad often introduce the game to local beaches in places like Australia, Canada, and even South America. While it hasn’t become a global phenomenon like beach volleyball, its attraction is undeniable. Travelers who encounter the game often stop to watch—and sometimes, they’re handed the ball and invited to join. There are even friendly competitions in Croatian coastal towns during the summer, drawing participants from all over the world who are eager to master the art of the splashy save.

In Croatia, Picigin can be played year-round, even in the icy waters of winter, with an annual New Year’s Day match that draws crowds of bundled-up onlookers. Thus picigin has become one of Croatias many cherished traditions. It’s a way to stay connected with the sea and each other. The sport has even been declared an intangible cultural heritage of Croatia, a nod to its significance in shaping coastal identity.

So if you’re thinking about a summer trip to Croatia and you’re on the fence, maybe picigin can win you over. Picture this: It’s a hot summer afternoon. The Adriatic glistens under a golden sun, and laughter rings out across Bačvice Beach. A circle of players in the shallow waters twist and dive in unison, chasing after a small white ball bouncing just above the waves. There are no jerseys, no whistles, no scoreboard—just pure action, laughter and excitement. Curious, you walk over, pause, smile, and watch for a while. Suddenly the game needs another player as one has to return home or has to get to work. Another player sees you and motions you to join in. It’s hot and sunny and you’re dressed to get wet anyway… do you accept the offer?

And thats it for the Super Slatko Report.
